Home insurance holders in Hampshire might have to review their contents insurance following a spate of burglaries in the region.

Property owners in the towns of Shirley and Freemantle have had a number of front gates stolen after thieves picked up on the rising prices being demanded by raw metal.
Such items can be taken to scrap dealers and exchanged for cash, although the government recently announced that laws will be tightened in order to tackle the rise in thefts.

Residents living in and around Southampton are now taking extreme measures to stop gate thefts, by taking them off their hinges and storing them inside their home.

Before the New Year, there were also reports of 30 gates being taken from a street in Berkshire.

PC Jordan Williams, of Hampshire Police, said that private householders are indeed at risk, given the capacity for raw metals to be sold at elevated prices.
