Keeping Your Home Secure this Summer: Top Tips

Thursday, 22 August 2013

While figures from the Office for National Statistics indicate that home burglaries have almost halved over the last ten years (from 890,099 between April 2002 and March 2003 to 468,217 between January 2012 to December 2012), experts are reminding householders to make sure that their properties are kept super-secure this summer, particularly those who are planning on heading away.

The standard-setting body for new-build homes, NHBC, recently issued a range of important security measures for those living in the UK to help protect people’s homes from theft. They include:

• Making sure windows have modern security locks; preferably ones that automatically lock and require a key to open them. It is important that windows are closed when no-one is home, even if you’re only out for a few minutes

• Ensuring that doors have robust locks, making it as difficult as possible for intruders to get in

• Fitting security lights so that any unwanted night-time visitors find themselves lit up as soon as they come near the house

• Fitting and maintaining a burglar alarm, which will put thieves off and alert your neighbours to their presence if they do manage to get inside the property

• Making it look as though you're at home even if you’re not, by asking someone you trust to pick up post, using a timer so that lights come on at certain times, and cancelling any deliveries

• Ensuring that no valuables are visible from outside the property, including electrical items, jewellery and even car keys

NHBC spokesperson Mark Jones says: “Spending money on security measures is a good investment. It will last a long time, can add value to your property and offers peace of mind that your home and belongings are well protected.”

Whilst these precautions are all vital, it's also important to have a valid home insurance policy so that you are covered in the unfortunate event that a burglary does take place.
