Car insurance: Captial premiums 'the most expensive'

Thursday, 18 October 2007

Drivers living in east London shell out more for car insurance than those anywhere else in the country, according to a new survey by moneysupermarket.com.

The price comparison site found that insuring a Ford Focus in the east end of the capital will cost on average £315, compared to just £116 in the cheapest UK city, Dundee.

Coming in second and third place as the most expensive areas for car insurance were Bolton and Liverpool, with average premiums costing £311 and £300 respectively. South-east London came in fourth place, costing an average £290.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It is not surprising premiums are high in the inner city area of east London, where crime can be prevalent."

However, he said that since different insurers weight factors such as crime differently, drivers should make sure they shop around for a better deal every year instead of sticking with the same insurer as they could save significant amounts of money.

For female drivers shopping around is even more important. Research from MoneyExpert.com shows that women only car insurance policies are not always the cheapest and in many cases a better deal can be found by going with a general insurer.
