"Make a list" says DIY guru

Overwhelmed by a raft of DIY opportunities? Ellie Tennant knows how you feel.

The freelance interiors writer has said that she is currently working on some home improvements herself and admits that working out a starting point is sometimes tough when there are many possible jobs to do. "It can be very overwhelming," she noted.

Her advice to home insurance holders is to jot down details of their property's rooms, writing the tasks needed in each down too. "Tackle [DIY] by breaking it into bitesize pieces," she says.

She also suggested that people should take advantage of the poor weather the country has been put through of late and get their DIY jobs in before it, hopefully, gets a lot better!

This Monday's Bank Holiday - something most of us have been dreaming of since Easter Monday – is a great opportunity for this sort of thing, she said.

Her advice was to sort out the usual weekend jobs on Saturday and Sunday, launching into home improvements on the gloriously workless Monday.

And as she suggested, the country will be glued to the Olympics come July anyway, meaning DIY jobs will probably go out the window.

"We're going to have a really busy summer with the Olympics and Jubilee celebrations," she said. "You're not going to get anything done then, so seize the day."

Over 20 million of our properties are in need of a job or two, according to a recent Artex survey.
