'Make time for winter' drivers urged

Tuesday, 13 December 2011

Drivers have been urged to be safe on roads this winter by making time for the weather, with a group dealing with road safety looking to reduce the number of insurance claims made over the cold months.

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership's tips to car insurance customers include making extra time for preparations before leaving the home. Checking driving conditions via traffic updates and latest weather forecasts can be useful, and leaving earlier can reduce the need to rush.

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership manager, Ken Wheat said: "Everyone should put safety first and, particularly in bad weather, consider whether their journey really is necessary or can be put off."

Drivers should also be aware of people working to clear the roads for motorists, and should give them the time and space to complete their jobs in order that the roads be safer for everyone.

Earlier this week, road charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists told drivers they should only undertake a journey if it was risk free and essential in winter.
