Travel insurance customers 'should be wary about mobile phone charges'

Travel insurance policyholders should be cautious about using their mobile phone abroad, consumer group Which? has advised.
The group welcomed the introduction of a cap on overseas mobile phone data charges when roaming in European Union (EU) countries but warned people against using phones outside the region.
Ceri Stanaway, mobiles expert at Which?, said: "There have been cases in the past of people unwittingly running up bills of literally thousands of pounds using the internet on their mobile overseas, so it's great that there is now a safety net in place."
But, she warned travel insurance customers that they could still face a nasty shock when travelling outside the EU, advising people to bear in mind the regulations only apply in Europe.
"Obviously, if you go outside an EU country you run the same risk as you did before of running up huge bill."
The European Commissioned announced that from the beginning of July, travel insurance holders holidaying within the EU would have a data-roaming limit set automatically at €50 (£41.50) unless they choose to change it.
