Motor insurance customers who turned up to see comedian David Walliams complete his marathon charity swim along the Thames have been celebrating an unexpected U-turn by Maidenhead council.

It comes after drivers complained that parking wardens had deliberately targeted the event and slapped parking fines on their cars while they cheered the Little Britain star on.

Appalled spectators told the Maidenhead Advertiser that enforcement officers had "swarmed like bees" around the supporters' cars and "gleefully" dished out fines.

The authority decided to cancel the charges after local people described the action as "uncharitable" and even "shameful".

Motor insurance customer Alan Browne told the paper that he thought the council should have provided extra parking rather than leaving drivers feeling ripped off.

Mr Browne noted: "Although I appreciate we want our council to keep our roads clear and raise money, I think this was a particularly mean way of doing it."
