Car insurance: Drivers call for tougher action

Thursday, 26 November 2009

Motorists support tougher action against motorists who flout the law, research from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and YouGov shows.

As drivers look to budget car insurance to keep the costs of driving down, they are also calling for more action to make the roads safer.

They back car insurance companies taking tougher action to expose those who lie about motoring offences in a bid to get cheap car insurance.

Nearly three-quarters of those questioned say drivers using mobile phones at the wheel are most likely to cause an accident.

"We rely on people being honest, but those who conceal motoring offences not only push up the cost of insurance for everyone, but also run the risk of having any claim rejected," said Nick Starling, ABI director of general insurance and health.

Car insurance providers are discussing with the government the possibility of checking for relevant motoring convictions and endorsements on licences before offering a car insurance quote, he added.
