Car insurance: Nearly half of Brits ignorant about oil

Friday, 15 June 2012

We all know why petrol is important – but why exactly do people put oil in cars? Nearly half of Brits apparently admitted their ignorance as to the substance's use when they took part in a Mobil 1 survey.

Even more of the 1,084 participants – three-quarters – weren't aware of the way to check a vehicle's oil. And apparently some 94 per cent of drivers didn't know that putting the right oil in a car can help make the engine last longer and possibly make fuel go further.

Dan McGoldrick, of Mobil 1 oil producers ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialities, has pointed out some of the benefits of oil for car insurance holders.

"Using the right oil for your engine can potentially improve fuel economy, reduce engine wear and save lots of expense in the long run," he said.

In separate research, Kwik Fit recently revealed that it had discovered three per cent of road users are not prepared for the possibility of flat tyres.
