New car registrations up in October

Wednesday, 07 December 2011

The number of new car registrations was up by 2.6 per cent in October, according to figures from SMMT.

It showed that 134,944 units were snapped up by car insurance policyholders, making it the second increase in the past three months.

However, new car registrations were down over the first ten months of 2011 by 4.5 per cent on last year, although it was reported that the market is on track to achieve a full-year total of 1.923 million units.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of SMMT, said: "Vehicle manufacturers and their dealer networks are working hard to offer consumers value for money through improved fuel efficiency, low running costs and innovative finance. We expect market conditions to remain challenging and hope the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement later this month will help to boost economic growth and consumer confidence."

Recently, Vauxhall revealed its all-new Astra VXR, which is the most powerful production Astra model it has ever built.
