Car insurance: Personal injury claims 'will be dealt with quicker'

Thursday, 24 September 2009

Motorists may find they receive money awarded following a personal injury car insurance claim quicker in the future.

The Ministry of Justice has announced a new compensation system is to be introduced that will deal with cases more efficiently.

By using standardised electronic forms and setting fixed legal fees for every stage of the process, the revised procedures should enable a decision to be reached faster.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) welcomed the announcement, pointing out it has spent a long time campaigning for a more streamlined system.

Spokesman Nick Starling said: "This new process will cut down on delays and reduce the high legal costs that are paid for through motor insurance premiums."

All claims worth between £1,000 and £10,000 will be dealt with under the updated procedures.

Earlier this year, ABI claimed plans to make it illegal to own a vehicle without motor insurance, rather than just to drive without cover, was a step in the right direction.
