Motor insurance: 'Keep sat navs safe'

Wednesday, 04 July 2007

While car insurance may cover theft, most Britons would rather not have to claim and police have reminded motorists to take steps to stop their satellite navigation (sat nav) systems from being targeted by thieves.

With more sat navs going missing in Berkshire, Superintendent Mike Ismay acknowledged that police are "struggling" to tackle the problem.

He asked drivers to get involved, saying: "Between the efforts of what the community are doing, we're struggling to reduce theft from motor vehicles.

"Collectively, we've got to do something about vehicle crime."

Police suggest that the one in five Britons who use a device to guide their motoring journeys hide the equipment when they leave the car.

Supt Ismay suggested that the campaign prompting people to keep their phones safe had been successful and that something similar could happen with the desirable sat navs.

Meanwhile, a Gloucestershire police force issued 2,500 dusters to drivers so that they could remove the marks left by the sat navs suction cups on their windshields.

Without the tell tale marks, it was hoped thieves would not know that the car was equipped with the navigation equipment.
