Car insurance: Hard-hitting seat belt campaign launched

Monday, 01 February 2010

A hard-hitting campaign has been launched today (February 1st) to remind car insurance customers of the risks of not wearing a seat belt.

The £1.3 million THINK! campaign, launched by road safety minister Paul Clark, reveals that people who are involved in an accident while not wearing a seat belt are in danger of damaging vital internal organs, something which can have fatal consequences even at relatively low speeds such as 30mph.

"This campaign reminds drivers that - no matter how short their journey or how slowly they are driving - they are risking their life if they set off without putting their seat belt on," said Mr Clark.

People are twice as likely to die in a car crash if they are not wearing a seat belt and on average, one life could be saved in the UK each day if everyone always wore a belt.

The THINK! campaign will be shown on television, radio, cinema and billboard advertising, however, the advert is so realistic and graphic it can only be shown on television after 21:00 (GMT).

UK law requires that drivers and passengers aged 14 and over in any vehicles must wear a seatbelt if available.
