Car insurance policyholders should all know the safety benefits of wearing a seatbelt when driving, but the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has called on expectant mums to pay close attention to how they wear their seatbelt. They state that the way they are strapped in will help to ensure optimum safety for both them and baby.

It advised drivers to wear the lower strap as far down as possible, below the bump and across their hip bones.

As well as this, the diagonal strap should be placed around the side of your bump.

Before getting behind the wheel, pregnant women should also consider how they feel before setting off on a journey

IAM advanced driver Amanda Smith said: "There is much advice available on whether or not is it safe to drive while you're pregnant. As long as you feel well and are comfortable, you can continue to drive up until labour."
