Travel insurance: Half a million skiers will hit the slopes without protection this season
Monday, 04 January 2010
Almost half of the estimated one million skiers who hit the slopes this season will not have taken out travel insurance prior to leaving the UK, new research suggests.
In addition, the survey by the Ski Club of Great Britain found that only a quarter of those who do take out travel insurance will read the terms and conditions of their policy to see what is covered.
According to the website ski-injury.com, which is written and maintained by Dr Mike Langran from Scotland, between two and four out of every 1,000 skiers or snowboarders will require medical attention every day.
Now Caroline Stuart Taylor, chief executive at the Ski Club - a non-profit club offering information, advice and travel discounts - has urged skiers to read the small print before heading for the snow.
She said that too often people got caught out because the insurance they bought was unsuitable or inadequate.
"People need to check they are fully covered for all the winter sports they intend to do, whether it is skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating or sledging," Ms Stuart Taylor said.
