Travel insurance: Skiing without insurance is snow joke
Monday, 06 November 2006
It's the start of the skiing season and many holidaymakers will soon head off for their jaunt on the piste, but new reports say that only half of them have adequate holiday insurance.
A report by moneysupermarket.com has found that just 28 per cent have cover for winter sports even though on average each tripper does four hours of skiing each day.
Peter Gerrard, a researcher at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Planning your winter wonderland getaway is always exciting, but if you are hoping to try your hand at any winter sports, such as skiing off-piste, snow-boarding or even snow-tubing, take adequate insurance and make sure you check your policy carefully."
It is also very important to remember that apres ski indulgence may invalidate your cheap travel insurance policy because often clauses invalidate accidents that happen under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
More than 1.2 million UK skiers went on an alpine holiday last year and research shows that those aged 18 to 29 are the most prone to accidents.
The treatment for a broken leg in Europe can cost up to £3,000 while in the US it can cost up to £25,000.
