The winter snow and ice conditions are likely to make the roads hazardous for at least the next week, and so the Highways Agency is urging drivers to slow down on the motorways.
Apart from reducing the risk of accidents, it will help avoid making claims on your
car insurance.
Many drivers are apparently ignoring the warnings about the icy motorways. A car insurance comparison site has reported that one driver has been clocked speeding at 90mph in Dunblane, Scotland.
The same insurer comparison site says the highest cause of accidents and car insurance claims in this weather is a result of over-confidence at the wheel.
Neil McSporran, from the Central Scotland Safety Camera Partnership, said: "Driving at high speeds and breaking speed limits in these conditions was clearly irresponsible."
Traffic Officer Eris Robertson said: We see a lot of collisions that are caused by people not braking in time when the roads are wet or slippery.
"If it's foggy, raining, snowing or icy, make sure you slow down and keep well back from the vehicle in front of you."
