Car insurance: SUVs targeted by spoof parking tickets
Tuesday, 06 June 2006
SUV drivers in London are finding themselves targeted by a spoof parking ticket campaign, which aims to cut the number of large cars on the city's roads.
Motorists who drive the huge 4x4s dubbed "Chelsea Tractors" are coming back to their cars in central London to find a parking ticket. The fuming drivers then realise, on closer inspection, that the tickets read "Do Not Pay Now".
The tickets continue: "Our children and grandchildren will pay for our dependence on fossil fuels."
On the reverse, the ticket lists government statistics about fuel economy and carbon emissions.
Campaigner Blake Ludwig told Reuters: "These gas guzzling off-roaders have no place in the city and our 'parking tickets' are a light-hearted way of trying to show drivers just how damaging their vehicles are."
He added that the huge cars were totally unnecessary in the city, doing little but pollute the atmosphere.
"We recognise there are people like farmers with a legitimate reason to use these vehicles, but the reality is that only five per cent ever leave the tarmac," he said.
Many car insurance providers have taken the same tact, offering cheap car insurance deals for drivers who own greener, more environmentally-friendly cars.
