Car insurance holders warned to take care on the roads

Thursday, 17 February 2011

Car insurance policyholders are being urged to ensure they take care on the roads because 'pothole season' is almost upon them.

GEM Motoring Assist is concerned about the safety of motor insurance holders due to budget cuts and road safety reductions; therefore it is warning drivers to ensure they take more care.

David Williams, chief executive of GEM, said: "It would not come as a surprise if local councils take a lot longer to deal with the problem, so we are encouraging drivers to stay alert and where possible take it upon themselves to report serious potholes."

He said potholes are "not simply just a nuisance", explaining they also pose a great risk to road safety.

At the end of last year, a poll by Kwik Fit revealed four in ten motorists had been forced to take dangerous action to avoid potholes on the roads.

One in five admitted to swerving into oncoming traffic to avoid the holes.
