Thailand has been named as the most dangerous holiday destination for Brits, according to new research.

The survey, based on 60,000 travel insurance claims, discovered that British holidaymakers heading to the island are likely to be subjected to food poisoning, involved in traffic accidents and have their belongings stolen or lost.

Travellers to South Africa are also being warned to ensure they are aware of the potential dangers when visiting the country especially as many tourists are often targeted by local criminals. Meanwhile Caribbean resorts were named as the worst place for insect bites and stings.

A number of European destinations also qualified as being potentially hazardous, with Austria named as the most likely place to result in a winter sports accident.

The research concluded that the safest places to travel to included Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany.

Anyone planning to take a holiday is reminded to ensure they purchase appropriate travel insurance before jetting off – even if their destination is concerned relatively safe.
