Car insurance: iQ may be a smart buy for cash-strapped drivers

Monday, 02 February 2009

Motorists looking at downsizing in a bid to cut the amount they spend on car insurance, fuel and road tax may be impressed by the latest achievement of the Toyota iQ.

According to the manufacturer, a new hypermiling challenge has seen the model outperform its official mpg figures.

Toyota reported the vehicle managed to travel more than 500 miles on one tank of fuel.

It also pointed out the route covered by the car took in some of the most congested town centres in England and Wales.

With a full tank of fuel, the vehicle is theoretically capable of 462 miles.

However, during the challenge the car managed some 504.2 miles before running out of petrol.

Toyota explained that works out at 71.6 mpg, in comparison to the official figure of 65.7 mpg.

As well as saving money on fuel, iQ buyers may find they also qualify for low cost motor insurance as a result of the model's small engine size.
