Travel insurance: Backpackers vulnerable to thieves

Thursday, 02 October 2008

Backpackers may find they have to make a claim of their travel insurance if they do not start taking better care of their cash, Gapyear.com warned.

Tom Griffiths who established the company said it is not enough for people to carry bank cards and cash around like they do in the UK.

He suggested backpackers might want to use a money belt if they want to avoid making a claim on their travel insurance.

Mr Griffiths also suggested splitting up cash and cards so they are not all kept in one place.

Furthermore, the travel expert claimed new arrivals in unfamiliar towns and cities needed to be particularly careful.

He stated: "People are more at risk in the built up areas because when you get there you're a bit jetlagged."

The organisation Gapyear.com offers support and advice to individuals taking a break from education or work in order to do something else in their own country or to travel the world.
