Tuesday, 03 November 2009

Car insurance customers may be interested to know that the British motor industry is becoming increasing environmentally friendly, according to recent stats.

Celebrating a decade of its annual Sustainability Report, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures show UK production plants are among the greenest in Europe.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said it was a good time to look back on some of the big improvements the industry - which forms more than ten per cent of Britain's export industry value - has made.

These improvements include CO2 emissions per vehicle down 41 per cent, water use per vehicle down 45 per cent, waste to landfill per vehicle down by 71 per cent and energy use per vehicle down by 24 per cent.

Mr Everitt added that the UK car industry was well ahead of Europe in terms of reducing energy use, getting through 12 per cent less energy than the EU average.

More than 1.5 million cars and commercial vehicles are produced in the UK each year as well as three million engines, contributing £10 billion added value to the UK economy.
