Travel insurance holders 'warned of unsafe destinations'

Saturday, 21 August 2010

Travel insurance holders heading to common holiday destinations such as Florida, Spain and the Greek islands can still fall victim to scams, fraud and health issues, Travelex has warned.

Ana Ansell, director at Travelex, said she was surprised that the well-known resorts regularly visited by Britons ranked so highly in the company's research of dangerous holiday spots.

Recently, the Office for National Statistics released data showing that more travel insurance customers went overseas in the second quarter of the year compared to the first.

Ms Ansell advised Brits to do their homework on holiday destinations before heading abroad.

"Holidaymakers should...check sites like TripAdvisor or the FCO [Foreign and Commonwealth Office] for any current warnings, local customs, transport advice, as well as local tourist offices, to ensure they are fully aware of all potential hazards in their destination, including creepy crawlies and other wildlife that may be lurking," she said.

Florida ranked in first place on the Travelex dangerous destinations study, followed by Australia, Cyprus and the Greek islands.
