Winter tyres 'are suitable for UK car insurance holders'

Sunday, 19 December 2010

Car insurance policyholders are being reminded that winter tyres can improve grip on the roads in wet, cold and icy conditions.

According to RoadSafe, winter tyres have a real benefit in icy and snowy conditions, like those experienced across the UK over the past week.

Tests by the British Tyre Manufacturers Association found a car braking at 60mph in five degrees C stopped 5m shorter when it had winter tyres fitted.

Adrian Walsh, RoadSafe director says: "In winter, these tyres are a legal requirement in some European countries, including Germany and Austria.

"Road safety and motor groups in Britain, including RoadSafe, TyreSafe and SMMT [Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders] recommend UK drivers follow the continent's example, and fit them in autumn and winter."

The forum's advice came as the secretary for transport, Philip Hammond, said the tyres were not appropriate for use in the UK.

This suggestion sparked outrage among road safety groups and tyre manufacturers in the country which have been keen to emphasise the benefit of using winter tyres in adverse conditions.
