Car insurance: Work-related crashes 'need to be addressed'

Wednesday, 25 February 2009

How to reduce the number of work-related car insurance claims has been discussed in Blackpool this week.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) has been holding its 74th Road Safety Congress at the seaside resort.

Figures from the group estimated that between 25 to 30 per cent of traffic collisions involve someone who is driving as part of their job.

This means approximately 200 individuals are killed or seriously injured every week in the UK in work-related crashes.

Rospa's occupational safety advisor Roger Bibbings said if more companies viewed road accidents as part of their health and safety agenda, more employees would get home safe each evening and traffic accident casualties would be significantly reduced.

He stated: "Being killed or injured while driving vehicles as part of one's job is the biggest risk faced by most workers."

People who do not use their cars to commute to the office may find they qualify for low cost motor insurance.
