Car insurance: Young drivers targeted by insurers
Wednesday, 06 September 2006
Young drivers could be subjected to new plans in order to reduce the number of accidents involving teenage motorists.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) believe that the government should consider the introduction of new legislation that would place limits on when young drivers are able to use UK roads.
The plans involve restricting newly-qualified motorists to driving during the day-time only as well as placing limits on the number of passengers they are allowed to carry. It is hoped the rules could ensure safer road conditions as well as reducing car insurance premiums.
An ABI spokesman said: "Over 50 per cent of accidents involving young drivers take place at night, often on a bend, in bad weather and after closing time at the pub. So, we are looking at measures to reduce night-time driving."
Car insurance data shows that young male drivers are around ten times more likely to be involved in an accident and each collision tends to result in an insurance claim that is double that of a more experienced driver – meaning many younger drivers struggle to find affordable and cheap car insurance.
